IDSR

Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) is a coordinated public health strategy designed to monitor, detect, report, and respond to diseases and health threats. Adopted by Somalia's Ministry of Health and aligned with WHO and International Health Regulations guidelines, IDSR strengthens disease surveillance systems at all levels, from community-based early warning to national outbreak response, to improve public health outcomes across the country.

The National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP), under Somalia's Ministry of Health, coordinates efforts to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality across the country through the National Malaria Strategic Plan. Targeting vulnerable populations and aligned with WHO global elimination goals, the programme works toward interrupting transmission, achieving pre-elimination in low-transmission regions, and reducing malaria burden by 40% in endemic areas, with a long-term vision of a malaria-free Somalia by 2030.

The National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP), under Somalia's Ministry of Health, coordinates TB prevention, care, and control across the country in partnership with international and local partners. Despite treatment success rates above 85%, Somalia carries one of the highest TB burdens globally, with ongoing gaps in case detection and access. The programme is focused on integrating TB services into primary health care and strengthening community-based care to meet national and global control targets.

NUTRITION

Nutrition services in Somalia address critical public health challenges including undernutrition and acute malnutrition, targeting vulnerable groups such as children under five and pregnant and lactating women. Led by the Ministry of Health, these services combine therapeutic feeding, dietary counseling, and community-based interventions, supported by integration into national health information systems to enable evidence-based decision-making for improved health outcomes.

Somalia's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals drives national efforts to reduce maternal, neonatal, and child mortality through the Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSP III 2022–2026) and the RMNCAH strategy. Led by the Federal Ministry of Health, these efforts have yielded gradual improvements in antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and immunization coverage. However, significant gaps in access, quality, and equity remain, reinforcing the continued prioritization of high-impact maternal, newborn, and child health interventions across all regions of the country.
