Nutrition services are critical in improving the health and well-being of the Somali population, where malnutrition remains a significant public health issue. These services ensure people receive essential nutrients, reduce the risk of disease, and enhance overall quality of life. In Somalia, the healthcare system integrates preventive and therapeutic nutrition interventions to address undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and, to a lesser extent, overnutrition. The government, through the Ministry of Health Somalia, in collaboration with various stakeholders, prioritizes nutrition as a key pillar for improving health outcomes and supporting sustainable development.
Nutrition services in health facilities and communities focus on educating the public, providing dietary counseling, and delivering interventions such as therapeutic feeding and supplementation programs for vulnerable groups, including pregnant and lactating women, children under five, and individuals with chronic illnesses. These services are often implemented through community-based approaches, including the management of acute malnutrition and outreach programs. Strengthening these services aims to reduce nutrition- related diseases and improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Furthermore, the integration of nutrition services into national Health Information Systems such as DHIS2 is a crucial step in improving healthcare delivery in Somalia. These systems enable efficient monitoring, tracking, and reporting of nutrition data, supporting evidence- based decision-making and resource allocation. By consolidating vital nutrition information, the system helps address malnutrition challenges, track progress on key indicators, and inform policies for better public health outcomes.
